  • Johannesburg - Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Doctor Khumalo was admitted to hospital after he was involved in an accident on the N1 in Johannesburg on Sunday, the soccer club confirmed.

The accident involving a black BMW - driven by Khumalo - and a mini-bus taxi occurred on the N1 between Maraisburg and Soweto around 05:00, said Metro police Inspector Edna Mamonyane.

She said a female passenger who was trapped in the BMW was seriously injured and "it took quite a while to free her" from the wreckage.

Three passengers in the taxi - two men and a pregnant woman - were also seriously injured while the driver sustained minor injuries. They were all taken to hospital; for treatment.

Mamonyane could not elaborate on the cause of the accident, but said police had opened a case of reckless and negligent driving against Khumalo.

Team manager Bobby Motaung told Sapa that Khumalo was currently held under observation at a private hospital.

"Doctors said he would be kept under observation for two days", he said. However, he could not say how serious Khumalo's injuries were rather than that he was conscious and talking.
