  • Johannesburg - Seven people died and nine were injured when a taxi lost control on M1 south near the Empire turnoff in Johannesburg on Sunday, ER24 said.

Spokesperson Riana Beech said four bodies were found on the freeway around 19:30 with a taxi door lying nearby but no vehicle in sight.

"The taxi was found a kilometre from the scene with three more bodies in and around it."

Beech said one passenger was seriously injured during the accident and another eight sustained slight injuries.

All nine were taken to various hospitals.

"Judging by the damage to the taxi, it appears as though the taxi might have slid on its side for some distance before flipping back on to its wheels," said Beech.

She said the cause of the accident was not yet known.

The M1 direction south had to be closed for traffic while clean-up operations took place.
