08/05/2008 10:53 - (SA)
Durban - At least 16 people were injured in a collision between a lorry and a minibus taxi in Durban's harbour area on Thursday morning, police said.
Superintendent John Tyala, confirming the accident, said the cause of the collision that left one person critically injured and another 15 seriously injured was unknown.
The two vehicles collided at the corner of Bayhead and Belfast Roads.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said all the injured were from the taxi.
The critically wounded person was airlifted by the helicopter to Albert Luthuli Hospital.
The rest of the injured were taken to various hospitals around the city by Netcare 911, ER24 and EMRS ambulances.
A number of passengers were trapped and the Durban Fire Brigade had to use the jaws of life to extract them.
Initially both lanes of Bayhead Road were closed but by 08:00, the North bound lane had reopened.
Bayhead Road is the main access road to Durban's busy container terminal. It was not immediately clear how severely operations at the terminal had been affected by the road closure.
