Hijackings, robberies soar in CT

Cape Town - A special team has been appointed to investigate the recent spate of vehicle hijackings and house robberies in Cape Town.
The team consists of detectives from certain police offices, the organised crime unit and the crime intelligence unit.
Senior superintendent Billy Jones said on Thursday police were investigating the possibility that a syndicate or syndicates were responsible for the hijackings.
"We're looking at incidents where the modus operandi coincides and detectives are then asked to make the relevant dockets available.
"The docket then goes to the team who work with a detective from the specific police station to solve the crime."
Jones said at the police's weekly news conference there was definitely a small increase in hijackings and house robberies, and that the crimes were regarded as serious and were being investigated thoroughly.
Looking for specific makes
In Mitchell's Plain on the Cape Flats alone there were eight hijackings in the past three weeks.
In two of the hijackings, the vehicle owners were shot dead.
The chairperson of the Mitchell's Plain community policing forum, Abie Isaacs, had warned last week that residents should be extra careful.
He told Die Burger that they knew hijackers especially looked out for Nissan Sentras, Toyotas and Volkswagen Golfs.
Next on the hijackers' lists were minibuses and bakkies.
