'Operation Speak-up' launched

Johannesburg - Gauteng police launched "Operation Speak-up" on Saturday, appealing to the public to blow the whistle on criminals.

Gauteng police spokesperson Govindsamy Mariemuthoo said the operation was aimed at increasing awareness among the public about the Crime Line anonymous tip-off service.

Since the launch of the service - an SMS-line and a website - in June last year, over 440 alleged criminals had been arrested and almost R20m of stolen property, drugs and counterfeit goods had been confiscated, he said.
