  • East London - Police have confiscated 1 250 litres of home-brewed alcohol in Cambridge near East London, said Eastern Cape police on Sunday.

Captain Mluleki Mbi said Cambridge police launched a crime-prevention operation targeting drinking places in and around Amalinda forest and the Cambridge area.

During the raid police discovered the liquor hidden in drums and plastic containers in a shack.

The liquor was confiscated, poured out on to a field and the containers taken to the police station.

No one was arrested in connection with the homebrewed liquor.

"Home-brewing is not criminal and is not governed by the Liquor Act."

"The home-brew is available for R1 a litre and makes people very drunk and makes some people sick," said Mbi.

In an unrelated incident a 40-year-old woman was arrested during the raid for selling liquor without registration.

    She paid a R200 admission-of-guilt fine.

Police also charged her with failure to safeguard her firearm when they found her .38 special lying under her bed.

She was due to appear before East London Magistrate's Court on Monday, said Mbi.
