Bogus cops hijack camphor truck
15/05/2008 09:03 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A truck driver was abducted by two men pretending to be traffic officers in Delmas, Mpumalanga, on Tuesday, said police.
Spokesperson Abie Khoabane said on Wednesday that the truck driver was pulled off the road by two "bogus" traffic police in uniform.
Khoabane said the men, who were standing beside a white Mazda 323, with no registration number and a blue light, signalled for the man to stop.
"The men told the truck driver that his brake lights were not working and when he got out, they pulled out a firearm and forced him into the Mazda,'' said Khoabane.
A third man, in civilian clothes, drove the truck away while his accomplices abducted the driver.
Driven around for hours
Khoabane said the truck and trailer were worth R500 000 and were still missing.
The trailer contained camphor cream.
The driver was driven around for 7½ hours and was dropped off after being robbed of his cellphone and R200.
Khoabane called on truck drivers to be cautious when driving on the road and, if in doubt when told to stop, to make an emergency call or drive to the nearest police station.
