Cops in trouble over red wine
15/05/2008 22:10 - (SA)
Bloemfontein - Two Free State policemen are facing possible suspension after removing 12 bottles of red wine from an accident scene, a spokesperson said on Thursday.
Sergeant Thandi Mbambo said the wine was allegedly stolen when a truck overturned on the N1 highway 15km north of Edenburg last week.
"The incident unfolded on May 9 2008 when crime intelligence in Bloemfontein received information that there were police officers in possession of suspected stolen property, which was wine."
Mbambo said the information was followed up and the wine - Boschendal Shiraz Vintage 2006 - to the value of about R500 was apparently found in the members' houses.
Police said the officers, Inspector Martiens Oupa van Everrie, 36, stationed at Edenburg, and Inspector Sekgomotso Daniel Shopane, 38, stationed at Tierpoort, appeared in the Edenburg Magistrate Court on Monday.
They were released on bail of R500 each. They face charges of possession of suspected stolen property.
Mbambo said documents had been handed to the provincial commissioner's office for a review and a decision on their possible suspension.
"We are going to make sure that we root out corruption in the SAPS and those involved in it, it does not matter how small the matter is," provincial commissioner Amon Mashigo said in a statement.
