Still fighting
Desmond Tutu is showing no signs of slowing down as he turns 77, and is still an advocate for justice.

  • Johannesburg - Thirteen people were murdered in xenophobic attacks across Gauteng over the weekend, police said on Monday.

This after a person was shot dead in Alexandra on Sunday night, said Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo.

This number excludes two more deaths reported in Tembisa on the East Rand, which could not be immediately confirmed by the police.

"There were a few incidents last night (Sunday). One murder was reported from Alexandra and there was some looting in Cleveland and shacks were burnt," said Mariemuthoo, adding that there were pockets of violence across the East Rand.

The unrest, which started in Alexandra a week ago and then spread to Diepsloot, has now hit Hillbrow, Jeppe, Cleveland, Tembisa and central Johannesburg.

The SABC reported that two people were killed and 26 shacks set alight in Tembisa on Monday morning.

On Sunday, the police reported 11 deaths in the East Rand and one in Alexandra.

Some 200 people have been arrested on a range of charges including rape, robbery and public violence.

There was a substantial police presence in all the affected areas.

The Red Cross said they had recorded at least 3 000 displaced people across Gauteng.

The police will release an update on the situation in the province after 10:00 on Monday.
