Mpofu welcomes SABC ruling
19/05/2008 13:14 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Johannesburg High Court set aside SABC CEO Dali Mpofu's suspension on Monday, criticising the way in which the chairperson of the board handled the matter.
"I rule that the meeting at which the decision was taken to suspend Mpofu was unlawful," said Judge Moroa Tsoka.
Tsoka added that the conduct of SABC chairperson Kanyi Mkhonza "falls short of a director who should act independently".
Mpofu welcomed the decision but said it was "a sad day" when a court had to criticise "people who abuse their power".
"But I will offer a hand of friendship to the board. There is a board meeting that I am attending this afternoon (Monday) ... I will sit down and try and resolve the issues amicably. I hope my hand of friendship will be welcomed.
"I suppose for now, I'm off to work," Mpofu told reporters outside the court.
Mpofu was suspended on full pay in the first week of May, a day after he suspended Snuki Zikalala, SABC group executive of news and current affairs.
