  • Durban - At least 100 hostel dwellers - armed with stones and bottles - converged on Durban's Umbilo suburb on Wednesday, threatening foreigners in KwaZulu-Natal, police said.

Umbilo police spokesperson Captain John Lazarus said the mob from the Dalton Road men?s hostel had been intimidating Nigerians since Tuesday night.

He said a 20-man mob had stormed into a Nigerian owned tavern on Tuesday evening, damaging property and smashing cars.

"No injuries were reported in that incident but since 6am today (Wednesday), the mob began intimidating the Nigerians again," he said.

However, the Mercury newspaper reported that at least six foreigners had been wounded, one with an axe.

Police told Sapa that a large police contingent had been monitoring the situation in Umbilo since early on Wednesday.

"They (hostel dwellers) are right now throwing bottles and stones at the foreigners and intimidating them, telling them to leave KZN," said Lazarus.

Provincial police spokesperson Director Phindile Radebe said she was busy in a meeting and could not immediately comment on the matter.
