Durban - A Limpopo man - who was gunned down at a wedding in Durban's Umlazi suburb at the weekend - was an official from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), police said on Wednesday.

Superintendent Vincent Mdunge also confirmed that the official was the best man at the wedding in U section on Saturday.

"A group of thugs burst into the wedding ceremony, caused havoc and then opened fire on guests," said Mdunge.

The official was shot and died on arrival at hospital.

No other injuries were reported and no belongings were taken from guests.

Asked whether the incident may have been politically motivated because nothing was stolen, Mdunge said: "The motive for the shooting was purely criminal because the official was not even known in the area."

Police were unable to release the name of the official even though his body was identified by family.

No arrests have been made.
