Johannesburg - A passer-by was shot dead in front of his two children following an armed robbery in Norwood, Johannesburg on Friday evening, Gauteng police said.
A group of five armed men, two wearing blue overalls, held up a supermarket owned by a Pakistani national on the corner of 7th and Louis Botha avenues around 07:30, said Captain Phillip Maganedisa.
"We don't know why, but they started shooting at random and a passer-by was shot in the head and chest. He died on the scene. He was 45 years old and with his son and daughter at the time. They were highly traumatised."
The men fled in a red Mazda 323 hatchback with the shop's afternoon takings.
The shop owner and employees were locked into the storeroom during the robbery and were unhurt.
