  • Johannesburg - Acting Labour Minister Ngconde Balfour will visit the Stellenbosch building collapse site on Wednesday, a spokesperson said.

This followed an initial report into the deaths of five people at the site which recorded a number of alleged contraventions of safety laws.

Ncgonde's visit at 12:30 on Wednesday came after the labour department alleged that there was no notification to the department of the construction work to be undertaken; no risk assessment plan on site; no documents relating to administration and operations of the project as required by law; no demolition work supervisor or competent people to supervise demolition work and no design, drawing or calculations of the support work structure on site.

"Two bodies were removed from the site early on Wednesday morning after the building was demolished at about 01:00," said Richard Bosman, director of community safety for the Western Cape town.

This confirmed the death toll of five.

Thirteen people were injured when renovating the 60-year-old building for sub-contractor Gaza Bouwers.

A spokesperson for principal contractor Lavita Builders was not immediately available to comment.

Labour Department spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi said the sub-contractor was one of the people injured and as he was still recovering in hospital, they had not been able to speak to him to get further details.

The department also wanted to establish whether he had made compensation fund contributions for the families of the dead and injured.

Inspections on the site would continue, she said.
