Skwatsha attacker in court
17/06/2008 12:26 - (SA)
Cape Town - The man accused of stabbing African National Congress Western Cape provincial secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha at a party meeting last week appeared briefly in Worcester Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
A court official said Ndikho Tyawana, 30, from the Boland town, had been charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The case was postponed to June 20 for a bail hearing.
Skwatsha was stabbed in the neck and back when he went to the town to announce the dissolution of the ANC's Boland regional executive.
He maintains the stabbing was an attempt to kill him.
Though the ANC has sought to play down the political overtones of the incident, it comes amid tension over the looming provincial conference.
