Johannesburg - A man has been arrested for allegedly trying to steal part of a speed camera after he was caught breaking the speed limit on Sunday, metro police said.
"He was speeding, about 135km/h, and he saw the [camera] flash go off," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnnaar.
The 32-year-old Roodepoort resident, driving a Renault Clio on the N1 north near Grasmere, then turned around and headed back to the camera.
"He made a U-turn across the highway and stole the flasher unit, which is the battery and battery cable, placed about 72 metres from the speed camera. He put it in his boot. Metro police pounced on him as he wanted to drive off."
He was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday to face charges of theft and malicious damage to property.
