  • Pretoria - South Africa's murder rate has decreased in the past year, with 38.6 out of every 100 000 people murdered in the period compared to 40.5 last year.

Police statistics for the period between April 2007 and March 2008 showed that 18 487 cases of murder were reported to police - the lowest figure since the turn of the century. The most cases reported were 21 533 in 2002/2003.

The decrease was not the only good news from the statistics released in Pretoria on Monday - as the country's other contact crimes have also shown a decrease.

Attempted murder was down by 7.5% with 18 795 cases being reported or a crime ratio of 39.3 incidents per 100 000 of the population, down from 42.5 incidents in 2006/2007.

Rape statistics were only presented for the nine months ending in December, since the law on rape changed in December.

During the period 36 190 rapes were recorded, or 75.6 cases per 100 000 of the population.

    Assault, robbery also down

Indecent assault was slightly down to 6 763 cases reported, compared to the 6 812 cases in the previous year.

In 2007/2008, 439.1 people out of 100 000 were assaulted with the intention to do grievous bodily harm - which translated into 210 104 cases reported to police.

Common assault was down to 198 049 cases reported or 413.9 per 100 000 of the population. This showed a decrease of 6.6% compared to the previous year's figures of 210 057 cases reported.

Common robbery had a 9.5% decline, the biggest decrease in contact crimes, with 64 985 cases reported or 135.8 incidents out of 100 000 people.

Robbery with aggravating circumstance was down from 126 558 reported cases in 2006/2007 to 118 312 cases reported in 2007/2008.

    30/06/2008 13:02

    30/06/2008 13:10

      Hogwash
    30/06/2008 13:11
this government is directly to blame. they are useless at spending the tax payers money wisely. they will allow this country to continue with it's crime becasue they don't care. let thousands of so-called "important" people get killed in one month then maybe someone will do something about the crime. there should be no crime at all and this is achievable... there is no word like impossible in modern times... the 2010 world cup will be lost to another country if things stay the same. - Hogwash

      Crime Stats
    30/06/2008 13:14
Yes, very nice propoganda - crisis what crisis? Perhaps the crime stats are "dropping" because there are now less people to murder, rob and rape within the target group seeing as though they are leaving in their droves. Also consider that many petty common robberies arent reported and pray tell were our foreigners included in the population mix...? - Womble

And they dare to even think of these as improvements?!!
    30/06/2008 13:14
What a bunch of useless, clueless, unfeeling imbeciles they all are, with the nerve to extend their crooked commish's contract as well just to add insult to injury! How many thousands of crimes go unreported? - The Truth

      So?
    30/06/2008 13:14
#1: Who would be foolish enough to believe any stats released by this corrupt and incompetent sham of a government? #2: Just LOOK at the figures - who gives a rat's bum if the figures are down - 18 487 of murder! Wow, aren't WE the lucky ones! - KimPossible

      Down to what?
    30/06/2008 13:17
Maybe down, but is 18000+ murders in a year acceptable? 50 a day!?? 18000+ attempted murders too? In peak holiday season do we manage 50 deaths on the road in a day? - MJ

    30/06/2008 13:18
Utter crap. Only possibility is that less was reported as no-one really trusts the police. Some people are still waiting for them to investigate a reported crime (those are probably excluded). - BigBang

      @hattie van Jaarsveld
    30/06/2008 13:26
What a pathetic comment from you. Why do you have to bring 2010 into this. When you unhappy do spoil it for everyone. People never threatened the Rubgy World Cup, Cricket World Cup or any of the other tournaments held in S.A so why is it that you believe the 2010 soccer world cup taken away. Just pathetic mentality. - hola

      MORE LIES!!!!!
    30/06/2008 13:28
More lies from the liars!!!!If lying was a crime it would have been the only stat that went up!!! - No more lies!

      Great!
    30/06/2008 13:31
I'm glad they're seeing an improvement but its still not good enough its still over 51 murders a day, not counting all the other heinous crimes on that list. - Wayne

      thats awesome
    30/06/2008 13:32
Wow - now i really feel safe. Well done police. Not! 1.) Either the police force has become so corrupt and missmanaged that they cant even keep decent records anymore. 2.) People have got so over the lack of action by the police that they no longer bother to report anything anymore 3.) Someone has interpreted the figures wrong because they were given their degree because of the colour of their skin. 4.) etc etc - David

      Rubbish
    30/06/2008 13:36
Ask yourself the following question: How many police cars do you see out on the road? I almost never see any. But metropolice I see lots, thats because the goverment gets money from the tickets they give people when speeding. That says alot about where they are heading ito crime prevention. Ok, and why should they care, it's mostly us whites thats complaining. They see security firms as employment opportunities but they employ criminals to protect us :-). I'm out of here! - Rubbish

Still a lot of people dead
    30/06/2008 13:37
So 20 000 people dead compared to 25 000 is Good News for the Government, the other 5000 that's supposed to up the figure is abroad, this is way sick that it can be high and for Overnemnt to be happy. - Undertaker
