Cop charged with child abuse

Grahamstown - A Grahamstown police sergeant and his wife are facing a charge of child abuse after they allegedly left their 20-month-old daughter alone.
The man, aged 34 and his wife, aged 33, have been charged under sections 1 and 50(3) of the Child Care Act No 74 of 1983, which criminalises the ill treatment, or abandonment of children.
They appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrates' Court on Friday, and were released on bail of R1 000 each.
The matter was postponed to August 7 for further investigation.
They were not asked to plead and no charges were put to them.
The two were arrested last Sunday after a neighbour saw the toddler on the stoep crying for her mother.
When she called for the parents and no one came out, the neighbour called the police, who with a local social worker removed the baby girl from the house.
The girl is now being cared for by relatives.
The couple was taken into custody when they returned home later on Sunday evening.
