  • Johannesburg - About 200 Zulu maidens have undergone virginity testing at the Qiniselani Manyuswa Tribal Court at Harding on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, the SABC reported on Saturday.

The ceremony went ahead despite a stipulation in the Children's Act - making virginity testing illegal for girls under 15, the broadcaster reported.

However, Queen Lina Ngcobo - who presided over the proceedings - said all the young girls came of their free will.

She said they were aware of the children's rights, but would continue to assist them preserve their culture.

The oldest maiden tested at the ceremony was 35 years old.

Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini was due to address the girls.

Those who support the revival in the traditional practice among young women said it was one of the best ways to stop unwanted pregnancies and the spread of HIV/Aids.

But opponents said the practice was sexist and outdated, the SABC reported.
