8 Durban students suspended

Durban - Eight students from Durban's Mangosuthu University of Technology were suspended after being found guilty of being ringleaders of an illegal protest earlier this year, the Mercury newspaper reported on Friday.
The institution's spokesperson Sanele Zondi said 16 students appeared before a tribunal on Thursday. Eight of them were suspended for a year.
Zondi said the purpose of the disciplinary action was to show that there were rules the institution was governed by and that must be adhered to.
The April protest, for better resources and more lecturers, led to violent clashes with police and more than 100 people being arrested.
The suspended students were all members of the students representative council, led by the South African Democratic Students Movement.
