Johannesburg - Two Durban Home Affairs officials who allegedly demanded money to release two arrested Swazi nationals will face corruption and extortion charges in court on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said they allegedly demanded cash from the two who had been arrested in connection with their documentation by an immigration team at the Home Affairs offices in Umgeni Road.

One of those arrested paid R1000 and, on release was told to tell the relatives of the other person to bring money to secure his release too.

"Arrangements were made for the relatives, who were in Swaziland, to bring money to the officials to release the second foreigner," said Mngomezulu.

The provincial anti-corruption task team was alerted and the officials were arrested in a trap outside a bottle store near their offices on Tuesday.

"It is believed that the arrested officials work together with some of the Home Affairs officials in Richards Bay. More arrests are expected," said Mngomezulu.

They were expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court.
