Johannesburg - The South African government has welcomed the decision by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to nominate Judge Navanethem Pillay for the position of high commissioner for human rights.
Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said South Africa congratulated Pillay.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Thursday formally appointed South African Judge Navanethem Pillay to succeed Louise Arbour as his high commissioner for human rights on Thursday.
French press agency AFP reported that the highly respected jurist was born in 1941 and was of Tamil descent. She had previously served as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
In that capacity, she played a key role in landmark decisions defining rape as an institutionalised weapon of war and a crime of genocide.
