Johannesburg - A 34-year-old taxi driver was wounded in a shooting in Ferndale, Randburg on Friday morning, said police.
Inspector Hein van Heerden said the taxi driver was sitting in his vehicle waiting for passengers at the corner of Bram Fischer Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue when a silver-grey Mercedes-Benz pulled up next to him.
"One of the occupants of the Mercedes then got out of the vehicle, pulled out a firearm and started shooting in the direction of the taxi driver," he said.
"Several shots were fired and the taxi driver was hit in the upper body."
The gunman fled in the car. The taxi driver was treated on the scene before being taken to a local hospital.
Van Heerden said Randburg police were investigating a case of attempted murder and looking into the possibility that the incident was linked to taxi violence in the Johannesburg area.
