  • Pretoria - A National Intelligence Agency (NIA) operative appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of contravening the provisions of the Intelligence Services Act, the SABC reported.

It is alleged that the NIA member leaked a five-paged classified document containing state secrets to Business Day newspaper between June and July this year.

According to the charge sheet, he did this without the permission of the director-general of the NIA, SABC reported.

He was arrested on Thursday morning and later released on bail of R5 000.

He must report to the Protea Glen police station in Soweto every Friday and in addition was ordered not to leave Gauteng without notifying the police.

The man is expected to appear in court again on October 1.
