Bloemfontein - South African border police have raided a dagga plantation in neighbouring Lesotho in a joint operation with Lesotho police, confiscating R23.4m of the drug, police said on Monday.

The operation, carried out in the early hours of Friday morning, led Free State border police and a unit of the Lesotho police to a massive dagga plantation in a remote area of Berea, Lesotho.

"They found the place deserted but discovered 18 tons of dagga with a street value of R23.4m," said police spokesperson Thandi Mbambo.

The operation had been planned for some time after a tip-off about the plantation, Mbambo told News24.

"They were tired of waiting for people to come across the border and then confiscating the drugs," she said. "They decided to take the initiative and root it out at the source."

The two units arrived at the plantation at about 03:00 to find it deserted. Mbambo said police believe workers and owners ran away as they saw the police vehicles approaching.

No arrests have been made, but investigations are continuing.

The 18 tons of dagga will be burned. The officers have received certificates of commendation from the provincial police commissioner in the Free State.
