Johannesburg - A man who reported a hijacking that never happened was fined R10 000 by the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, Johannesburg police said.
Captain Jethro Mtshali said Senzeni Nkosi, 32, reported that his car was hijacked on June 27, but it later emerged that his friend had taken the car home as Nkosi had been too drunk to drive.
"Police opened a hijacking case, but later found the car parked at his home."
The friend told the police he had driven the car and had parked it there because Nkosi had been too drunk.
According to Mtshali, Nkosi did not know what had happened to his car and went to the police to lay a charge of hijacking.
Nkosi was charged with perjury and defeating the ends of justice. He was fined R10 000 or nine months imprisonment, suspended for five years, Mtshali said.
