Welkom - Police arrested a student at the Welkom campus of the Central University of Technology Free State, after a group of students went on the rampage on Thursday.
"Police used rubber bullets to disperse the group," said police spokesperson Superintendent William Mokwena.
He was not sure what charges would be brought against the student but public violence and damage to property would be considered.
"Two lapas at the campus were burned and damaged, but we are still forming charges."
Mokwena said the incident happened about 07:00 on Thursday.
It was apparently related to the announcement of election results for the student representative council on campus on Wednesday.
Mokwena said it was first announced that the elections had been won by Azasco (Azanian Students Convention).
"This was a mistake and the announcement was then made that Sasco (SA Students Congress) had actually won the election. "
Azasco students were not happy with the new announcement and trouble started, he said.
Police were called to the campus on Thursday morning and rubber bullets were used to disperse students.
Police were monitoring the situation at the campus, Mokwena said.
