Auckland - Two South African men have died due to asphyxiation, and a third is in a serious condition in hospital, after a camping expedition in New Zealand went horribly wrong.
The men were exposed to carbon dioxide after they apparently used braai equipment indoors, while staying at Ruapeke camping ground near Raglan in the Hamilton region.
The son of one of the deceased came upon the scene on Sunday morning when he wanted to wake them up for a fishing expedition. He could not get the door open.
The injured man, who at that point could not move, apparently asked him to get help.
An air ambulance transported the 32-year-old survivor to the Devonport navy base in Auckland, where he was taken to a hyperbaric chamber and given treatment similar to that for decompression sickness.
He is in a serious condition and will probably have to undergo an operation.
The names of the deceased have not yet been released.
