Johannesburg - A 54-year-old man was recovering in hospital on Tuesday after enraged Soshanguve residents assaulted him for cutting copper cables, Pretoria police said.
"The mob descended on him on Monday evening while he was busy cutting the cables at Soshanguve's H extension with his two neighbours aged 19 and 20," said Captain Solly Marindi.
On realising that the mob was on to them, the two young men fled, leaving the older man behind.
"But a group of community members chased after them while others were busy beating up the older man, causing serious head injuries," he said.
One of the men fled to the nearest police station while the other ran to their house in the area.
"The one who fled home was apprehended and taken to the police station where his cousin had just been handed over to police. The two are in custody and as soon as the older man recovers they will appear in court together," Marindi said.
