Obama 'another Nelson Mandela'

2008-11-05 10:06

Verashni Pillay

Cape Town - South Africa's speaker of Parliament was in tears at the US Consulate General's residence on Wednesday, as she compared US president-elect Barack Obama's win to Nelson Mandela's historic victory.

"I got the same feeling most non-South Africans got in 1994," said Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde, calling him "another Nelson Mandela".

"If there is change in the US and hope in the US then there is hope for the entire world," she told News24 moments after embracing her American friends.

A crowd of about 150 prominent South Africans and Americans living in Cape Town gathered at the residence in Bishopscourt at 05:00 to watch the election unfold.

1994 election 'moved the world'

Mahlangu-Nkabinde, who was appointed Speaker in September this year, said that South Africa's landmark election in 1994 had moved the entire world, much like the recent US election.

And Obama's election was good news for South Africa, she said, not only because of his African roots, but because of his policies and beliefs.

"We will all embrace this change and assist where we can," she said.

Others were also moved to tears as they watched Obama's powerful acceptance speech on several big screens.

"I'm a basket case right now," said an American professor, Seth Pollack. "Everybody back home is so inspired."

He said his "conservative" mother had even threatened to move to South Africa if Obama didn't win.

"I'm going to go cry some more," he joked as he joined his wife in front of the screen.

Yes we can

Meanwhile, Democrats in South Africa had their own celebration in Johannesburg.

"The way in which Obama fought this election, not as a black man, but as an American desiring to unite the greatest nation on earth sends a very important message to every American citizen, every individual across the world and all world leaders," Democrats Abroad chairperson R Courtney Priester said in a press release.

There are about 20 000 registered US citizens in South Africa and almost all voted in these elections, according to Priester.

He noted that Obama was assuming leadership at an extremely challenging time in US and global history. "But the impossible becomes possible when we work together. Can we conquer the challenges we face? Yes we can."

I wish people would STOP turning Obama into the Obamessiah! He didn't go to jail to 27 years ; he didn't fight in a struggle movement ; he didn't suffer under an oppressive regime his whole life! He is NO Nelson Mandela PERIOD!
david 11/5/2008 10:32:06 AM
O pu-lease. South africans only sees a black face and rejoices. Does Gwen have a cooking clue about Barack's policies ? She is nothing but yet another racist.

This election is hailed by our government and festivities were held with American citizens that voted in the US elections here in South Africa. Then, can someone tell me why can't our own South African citizens living abroad vote in our elections?
Mams 11/5/2008 10:45:26 AM
everything has its own time now is about time. congragulation Obam i think this is very inspiring.
Elize 11/5/2008 10:49:14 AM
I wish that half of our South African leaders can be like Barack Obama. Then I will also vote for them!!
Navarac 11/5/2008 10:49:29 AM
If Obama can "walk the walk", we have some hope in SA because when he was "talking the talk" there was never a suggestion that major decisions would be influenced by skin colour. Let's hope JZ watches and learns!
David 11/5/2008 10:49:58 AM
This is so unbeliavable and Great.I'm a South African but I'm inspired by the events in America in particular Barak Obama.I hope South African poloticians can learn something from America and implement some of the ideas to suit South African situation. The voting system in South Africa needs to be reviewed so that the ordinary people gets involved in choosing their presidential candidate rather than the party doing it and claiming that is what the masses need.

How can one even begin to compare Obama with the Great Nelson Mandela ? Nelson Mandela is unique and incomparable and few in the recorded history of the world even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as him. Obama still has to prove himself as president and he certainly has done nothing for his country yet aside from giving them HOPE. Time will tell whether he'll do 1 tenth of what Mandela did, until then he's just a promising president and nothing else. What an insult to Mr Mandela.
T-R 11/5/2008 10:55:28 AM
We have all hailed the USA public, overwhelmingly white, voting for a black president. Colour was not the issue. Now, what is the chance of a white President being elected democratically in South Africa again, or even a White President representing the ANC - based on his/her abilities? Our local plebs hail the Obama achievement under democracy, whilst the scourge of racism runs thick in our own continent. Of course, the issue of race always seems to be a 1 way street...
Thandile 11/5/2008 11:00:55 AM
There is not a single country in the world with a black president where there is peace and stability. Just the opposite is the fact. God bless America from becoming a second South Africa, and after South Africa the 3rd Zimbabwe.
CTheB 11/5/2008 11:03:30 AM
I think it's fantastic that Obama won. The opposition only offered more of the same or worse. But this comparison is more than just a bit much. This is a great moment because of the opportunity to reverse the tyranny of the Republicans policies that have brought the USA so low. The cynic in me wonders if these people would be so moved if Obama were white.
Miles 11/5/2008 11:03:55 AM
I think it is fantastic that history has beind made in America well done Obama.

Sensationalistic BS! Nelson Mandela fought and suffered for freedom most of his life, uplifting and restoring dignity to millions. Obama has done nothing..he just happens to be black...If anyone deserves to be compared to Mr. Mandela it would be Martin Luther King. (white south african)
dez 11/5/2008 11:17:51 AM
Thandile - such a pessimist you are. And about Mandela. He's not God. Why can't anyone be compared to him. Not everyone has to go jail to be exceptional. It's unbelievable how narrow-minded some of us can be! Obama did well. Yes, we hope he succeeds in all that he promised to do. For the sake of peace and security in the east and the world. And yes, being the first black president of USA is special. You don't need to be black to see that.
JEN 11/5/2008 11:19:42 AM
People shud stop their warped way of thining i do agree with voting abroad however people shud start thinking +ly, or if they cant do anything keep their mouths closed cos they using up wat little oxygen we have
Bongani Zondi 11/5/2008 11:21:28 AM
Congratulations to Barack Obama. This has been a historic victory. There is great hope throughout the world. God Bless America and the whole world.
Guy 11/5/2008 11:22:26 AM
McCain had won, the American populace would have been lambasted as deeply racist and bigotted. I suppose we can now look forward to dozens of taxpayer sponsored trips to America for our politicians to congratulate their new idol. Africa is just glad he's not white, thats all they want!
Barry 11/5/2008 11:22:41 AM
It's laughable that this woman can even liken Obama, however historic his election might be, to a legend like Nelson Mandela. She obviously has worryingly little knowledge of history and politics if she can make that comparison. Then again, one can expect such ramblings from certain members of Parliament.
Thomas 11/5/2008 11:23:21 AM
Mandela went through apartheid, fighting arrests, jailed for 27 years and not hate his white brothers and sisters. Obama campaigned and played well and at the right time and his CV is not so impressive.People like his Charisma period.
Wendy 11/5/2008 11:28:52 AM
its good that they made the comparison, both of these men's names will go down in history as the first black presidents of both their respective countries.Jon and David you are just plain racist, obama's life in the US has been his whole struggle and we will celebrate his victory for eternity!! you can continue to wallow in self pity!
bangilizwe 11/5/2008 11:29:11 AM
how can people compare Obama to the greate Madiba, the only person you can compare to the greate man is only Martin Lurther the king, who's Obama anyway?
Thandile 11/5/2008 11:31:32 AM
Congratulations to Obamma, yes he is not Madiba but he is an america hero and a worldwide icon in his way. Thandile, go dont be negative. What do you know abt politics, maybe it is the end for you but for a whole lot of people its a new beginning. GOBAMMA

Time for a change in our own country.... This weekend all of us that have not registered to vote in our general elections next year should go out there and REGISTER and more importantly VOTE next year!!!! Lets get rid of the POWER PLAYERS in this country!!!!
Gerald Sebopetsa 11/5/2008 11:38:08 AM
the comparison between Barack Obama and Mandela is on one aspect. Its historic victory. Mandela was the first black President of SA. Barack Obama is the first black president of the USA.In history, USA never had a black man in their white house. In history, before 1994, RSA never had a black Presidnet. Its not comparison of struggle for fredom and any other thing than "victory". I dont think it is an insult to The Great Mandela. Understand the context of what you read.

This to ME is the journey of an African rising, bringing change, hope and peace to the whole world.Africans are reclaiming their places in the world stage.God bless Obama,my hero
Teal 11/5/2008 11:39:19 AM
Afican countries expecting 'favours' from Obama because he is black...What a joke! What needs to be praised is that a majority chose a president of another minority race....which will NEVER happen in South Africa. I'd like a comment about THAT from our "pro-democratic" govenment.
Craig 11/5/2008 11:40:22 AM
Lets hope his Predecessor doesnt F... things up

obama's victory was a victory for the world just like mandela's. no he is not mandela but his victory today is because of american heroes who like mandela risked their live for social justice. he was able to like mandela, bring a poeple together to change the status quo to bring people hope instead of fear. Viva Obama Viva!!
Regina Peta 11/5/2008 11:50:10 AM
I don't forsee peaceful elections like the US. Obama has done us proud. South Africans are still fighting and cursing each other with words. What's next in this country? A great shame.
CW 11/5/2008 11:52:32 AM
Well done to Barack Obama! I think that he will be a good president but he will also soon find out that delivering is not nearly as easy as campaigning... To compare him to our Madiba is ridiculous. There will only ever be one Nelson Mandela! President-elect Obama has a long long way to go before he deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Mr Mandela who delivered a miracle!
