Kimberley - An eight-year-old girl was killed and a three-year-old girl injured in Kimberley when they were knocked over by a woman who was apparently driving without a licence.

Police spokesperson captain Tony Modise said on Wednesday that Tailor Moses, 8, and Lumka Moses, 3, were knocked down at about 17:50 on Tuesday by a 45-year-old woman who was driving without a licence. The accident happened in 17th Street, Homevale.

Neville Moses, 38, the guardian of both girls, said on Wednesday at their home in 18th Street, Homevale, that the two girls had been on their way to a nearby tuck shop to buy chips.

"We suddenly heard people scream. The woman who had run the children over, had apparently been practising her driving on the open piece of land. It seems she ran the children over as she was going around a bend."

Tailor died on the scene.

Moses said the woman had been to see the family earlier in the day to apologise for the accident. He said she was "in a state".

The family would let justice take its course, he said. They weren't going to instigate legal proceedings against the woman.

On Wednesday afternoon Jolene Moses, 21, Lumka's mother and Tailor's sister, was still at the hospital with Lumka.

"Both Lumka's legs are in plaster and her neck was also injured," Moses said.

Betty Moses, 40, Tailor's mother, who is seriously ill, had been admitted to hospital before the accident. By Wednesday afternoon she still didn't know that Tailor had died.
