Johannesburg - The death of an alleged robber in police cells in Norwood was being investigated, the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) said on Friday.
The dead man was allegedly involved in the murder of prominent diamond dealer, Michel Rubenik.
Rubenik, 50, was gunned down near the Diamond Centre in the Johannesburg city centre on Monday night.
ICD spokesperson Dikeledi Phiri said the alleged robber's body had visible injuries consistent with assault, as well as broken ribs.
However, she said the ICD could not confirm the cause of death.
"At this stage I cannot say what the cause of death was until we receive the post-mortem results," said Phiri.
Four armed men were arrested in a silver Toyota Corolla on the M1 highway on Monday, following Rubenik's death .
One of the men died in the police cells at the Norwood police station.
