Johannesburg - Ten hawkers have been arrested for selling fireworks illegally at various street intersections around Johannesburg, metro police said on Wednesday.
Inspector Edna Mamonyane said fireworks valued at R400 000 has been confiscated.
She said selling of fireworks at intersections contravened the city's bylaws.
"Those arrested have been charged with trading in fireworks without a permit."
She said people should be considerate to animals when using firecrackers to welcome in the New Year.
"If you buy from a legal trader you will be able to get fireworks with bright colourful display and less noise," she said.
