Pietermaritzburg - The family of Elmer Symons, 29, who was killed on Tuesday while taking part in the Dakar rally, are battling to come to terms with his death.
"No one will ever know what happened, not even the other competitors who arrived after the accident. It is difficult to grasp how this could have happened, with all the preparation, focus and care we took before the rally," said his brother Philip Symons.
Symons, riding a KTM 660 motorcyle, came off during stage four of the rally between Er Rasjidia and Ouarzazate in Morocco. He was declared dead by doctors attending the accident.
It is still unclear how the accident happened.
His brother, who worked as the team's mechanic, arrived back in Ladismith in KwaZulu-Natal from Dakar on Thursday.
He will talk to the organisers and the South African embassy on Friday about how and when his brother's body can be brought home.
