Crime plan for Joburg
24/01/2007 07:35 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Johannesburg metro police will employ 500 officers a year until 2010 to ensure safety in the city during the Soccer World Cup, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said on Tuesday.
They would be deployed on the city's roads and busy areas.
"In addition to that, more surveillance cameras will be installed to ensure that people are safe."
Minnaar said 198 surveillance cameras were already installed in the city centre.
"The city centre is safer now than it was six years ago. We have succeeded in bringing down the crime rate."
He said 500 officers would have been trained by the end of this year.
