Johannesburg - Former president Nelson Mandela says he is relieved the government has changed its policy on HIV/Aids: "These are responsible people who could not allow babies to continue to die."

Mandela was speaking at a function in Soweto where he was receiving a R150-million donation from an international pharmaceutical company, Aventis Pharma.

He was referring to an announcement by government last week that it would extend the provision of nevirapine to victims of rape.

Mandela dismissed media reports that the government had changed its police on Aids because he had entered the fray.

He reminded the public that he had said before the opening of parliament this year that there would be progressive efforts in the fight against HIV/Aids.

He received the R150 million on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
