Cape Town - Western Cape premier and national NNP leader, Marthinus van Schalkwyk called Youth Day on Monday a celebration of strength, character and potential.
"The most important role for any government is to provide its people of all ages with the tools they need to be builders," the New National Party leader told a Youth Day rally at Grassy Park, Cape Town.
"Builders of growth, builders of jobs, builders of hope and builders of human dignity. We are building a province in the Western Cape which provides a home for coloured, white, black and Indian youth, and no one should ever again feel excluded or like a second-class citizen in this province. I want you to join hands with our Government to build the Western Cape," Van Schalkwyk added.
"One of the most powerful symbols of that time, and of the defiance and resistance of 16 June, was the simple brick. It became the image of protest, whether thrown at the security forces, or through the windows of schools which tried to enforce the system of separate education.
"It is time for the brick to again become the symbol of 16 June but in a very different way. It is time for all South Africans, young and old, to seize the bricks which are the building blocks of the new South Africa, and to make a choice to join us a builders, not as breakers," he said.
