SA politicians don't 'click'
Obama did. But experts say local political parties don't understand the value of a techno-savvy campaign.
DA: We didn't copy Obama
Some say the DA's new logo bears a striking resemblance to a logo we've seen before.

  • Johannesburg - The Speaker of the National Assembly, Frene Ginwala, has been awarded the North-South Prize of the Council of Europe for 2003, her office said on Wednesday.

The office of the secretary of parliament said in a statement that Ginwala would receive the award in recognition of her leadership in the fight against apartheid, her work towards the establishment of the Pan-African Parliament, her clear focus on and priority for Africa's development, and her passionate commitment to global interdependence and solidarity.

The North-South Prize is awarded annually to one person from the global North and one from the South, who have demonstrated strong and visible commitment, and outstanding achievement regarding human rights protection.

The recipient of the prize from the North for this year is Paul "Bono" Hewson of the Irish rock group, U2.

Ginwala will receive the prize from the President of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio, at a ceremony in Lisbon on Monday.
