PAC: Give Aristide asylum
12/03/2004 13:36 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) urged the South African government on Friday to urgently grant asylum to deposed Haitian leader, Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
President Motsoko Pheko said his party regarded all people of African descent as Africans and also recognised all governments that were democratically elected into power, however unpopular they were, should not be removed by force.
He said it was South Africa's obligation to Haitians not to recognise "the illegal government of Haiti until free and fair elections have been conducted there".
The United States, Pheko continued, had claimed for itself "the sole right to overthrow all governments that refuse to be its surrogates".
"Good governance must not be defined in terms of what is good for the American foreign policy, but in terms of recognition of the principles of international law and national constitutions of various countries in the world," he said.
