Zim polls to be fair - ANCYL
30/03/2005 22:57 - (SA)
Cape Town - The African National Congress Youth League says it is confident that a political environment "conducive to free and fair elections" exists in Zimbabwe - where parliamentary elections will be held on Thursday.
Zizi Kodwa of the ANCYL said: "Once more, the people of Zimbabwe will tomorrow go to the polls to vote for the party of their choice.
"These elections have been forecast as a doomsday by those who have always favoured what has been referred to as regime change."
Kodwa said further: "We have accordingly insisted that the people of Zimbabwe must determine their own destiny, and we have consistently refused to be shop stewards of the West.
During February 21, during celebrations of the Zanu-PF Youth League this year held in Zimbabwe, we stated our positions
even in our bi-lateral meetings with the Movement for Democratic Change Youth, that they must exercise discipline and tolerance with each other."
'No violence, intimidation cases'
Kodwa said: "To this end, we are confident that a political environment conducive to free and fair elections exists.
"All political parties taking part in the elections, including independent candidates, have campaigned in the length and breadth of the country with no violence and intimidation being reported.
"Foreign media, including South African media has been covering the elections without any restrictions.
"We are amazed that even at this late hour, there are people still, even in our own country who parrot a sponsored view, demanding a postponement of elections."
Kodwa said the ANCYL wished the people of Zimbabwe peaceful and successful elections. "We are with them, in their struggle for total liberation."
