'ANC, ID sabotaging meeting'
15/03/2006 13:29 - (SA)
Cape Town - Tension-laden proceedings of the Cape Town city council have been temporarily adjourned to allow parties to caucus, Sapa reported on Wednesday.
The adjournment was requested by the African National Congress (ANC) and the Independent Democrats (ID) after their candidate for the post of Speaker was defeated by the combined vote of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and smaller parties.
The ANC and the ID are subverting democracy in Cape Town by trying to sabotage Wednesday's council meeting, DA spokesperson Ryan Coetzee said on Wednesday.
"The ANC and ID lost the election for Speaker, called for a caucus, left the chamber and are now refusing to return. They have hijacked the PAC councilor who now cannot be found.
"As a consequence, the council meeting cannot proceed because the rules state that there must be 106 people in the chamber in order for the meeting to go ahead."
The ANC and the ID have joined forces to bring the city of Cape Town to a standstill, the DA stated.
"They need to accept the outcome of a democratic election, come back into the chamber and let democracy take its course. This has been a disgraceful display of anti-democratic behaviour.
At the time of writing, the ANC had decided to return to discussions. "The behaviour of the ANC throughout this meeting has been disgraceful," the DA said.
