  • Johannesburg - The Congress of SA Trade Unions in KwaZulu-Natal says the timing of President Thabo Mbeki's statement - that the next president of the country should be a woman - raises questions.

On Friday, Mbeki said he saw no reason why the next president of the country could not be a woman.

"I have been criticised about this, but as far as I am concerned the next president of South Africa should be a woman," Mbeki told hundreds of women in Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State.

Cosatu provincial secretary Zet Luzipho said the statement came at a time when everyone was awaiting the verdict in former deputy president Jacob Zuma's rape trial.

According to SABC news reports on Sunday, Luzipho said women should not be used for - what he called - selfish political agendas hidden in campaigns for women empowerment.

Luzipho said it should be asked what made Mbeki so confident that the next president would be a woman.
