R300m to go to health workers
11/01/2007 10:35 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Eastern Cape health department is to pay out R300m in outstanding fees to health care professionals.
"Due to backlogs in payment of injuries on duty, overtime and other human resource related issues some workers had not been paid out," spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said on Wednesday.
Kupelo said the Bisho health head office had been allocated R80m while the Port Elizabeth, East London and Mthatha hospitals would receive R100m to settle backlogs. Community health care centres and clinics had been allocated R120m.
"I urge workers particularly retiring workers to come and claim their benefits," said Kupelo.
Kupelo said the department was expected to have settled the backlogs which may have been outstanding "as far back as in 1998" by March 31.
The R300m budget comes from the provincial treasury.
An additional R52m had been set aside towards the recruitment of new health professionals.
"This will assist the province in retaining and recruiting more skills," said Kupelo.
