Pretoria - "I was so excited about the new Afrikaner leader, but I was very disappointed to hear that De La Rey was a dead general."
So said Dr Wally Serote, chief executive of the Freedom Park Trust, at a media conference in Pretoria on Thursday.
Serote said Freedom Park had come to the conclusion that there was a lack of great Afrikaner, Indian and Coloured leaders.
"We have been doing research on this for the past few years. It's interesting that there aren't many leaders who stand out."
On a more serious note Serote said Freedom Park had arranged for the contentious De La Rey song to be translated into English, to judge its real meaning.
Freedom Park is trying to honour all the victims of conflicts in South Africa, he said.
Serote called on "all South Africans" to start accepting ownership of Freedom Park.
"We must move away from the view that Freedom Park is a place where only the pain of a certain group of people is reflected."
Serote caused a furore last year when he said that South African soldiers who had died in the border war would not qualify for inclusion for Freedom Park's wall of remembrance.
He said on Thursday that Freedom Park was pleased with the dialogue that had taken place on this topic in recent times.
