Zuma plea to church on morals
25/03/2007 23:03 - (SA)
Rustenburg - African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma has called on the church to be vocal on matters concerning morality.
Speaking at the launch of a group of churches in Rustenburg on Sunday, Zuma said the church had a role to play in ensuring that the laws of the country were in line with the wish of the majority.
"The church was involved in the formation of the Freedom Charter.
It was there when the ANC was founded in 1912 and it took part in the struggle for freedom."
Zuma said it was high time the church confronted the government on laws that were not morally right.
But, he warned that the church must also take part in debates regarding bills before they were signed into law.
Church urged to transform
In that way the church would make sure that laws were morally correct.
He challenged the church to transform and occupy its rightful place in society.
Zuma was speaking to about 300 people at the launch of the Rustenburg Group of Churches' prayer day on poverty, unemployment, HIV/Aids and crime.
Cosatu in the North West pledged to support the church in its programme, said the federation's provincial secretary, Solly Phetoe.
