  • Johannesburg - A story in a weekly newspaper on Friday that names the men behind businessman Tokyo Sexwale's presidential campaign is "nonsense", Sexwale's spokesperson said.

Chris Vick said the article in the Mail and Guardian "purported to contain details of people who are lobbying for Tokyo Sexwale".

The report read: "An amalgam of Cabinet ministers, provincial leaders and ex-political prisoners is said to form the bulk of the group lobbying for businessman Tokyo Sexwale to take the Union Buildings in 2009."

    This group apparently includes:
    - Gauteng finance MEC Paul Mashatile,
    - Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa,
    - the former mayor of the Nelson Mandela Metropole, Nceba Faku,
    - businessman and former ANC activist in the Eastern Cape Mpumi Gaba, and
    - businessman and ANC national executive committee member Popo Molefe.

Vick said the report placed people under pressure to deny things which never happened.

"None of the people named even need to respond; it is obvious the story is nonsense, and confirms our view that we are in a season of rumours."

Vick added that the report would not deter the nomination processes of the African National Congress in the run-up to the December conference.
