Cape Town - Some of the world's most-respected retired leaders are getting together on former president Nelson Mandela's 89th birthday next week to see how they can jointly help to alleviate the globe's most pressing problems.
Mandela is to host a press conference in Johannesburg on July 18 to announce the formation of a major global humanitarian initiative, according to a media invitation to the event issued on Thursday.
Mandela would be joined at the conference by his wife, Graca Machel, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and a select group of world leaders.
These would include former United States president Jimmy Carter, former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan, and former Irish president Mary Robinson.
Will remain independent
"This group of international leaders will share how they intend to work together to contribute their wisdom, independent leadership and integrity in addressing some of the world's toughest problems.
"This group will remain independent of political constraints and use its collective skills in an attempt to bring bold and innovative solutions to long-standing conflicts and leverage resources to help alleviate human suffering," reads the invitation.
