Mbeki doccie: Interdict sought
17/07/2007 16:27 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The SA Broadcasting Corporation is seeking an urgent court interdict to prevent the controversial documentary on Thabo Mbeki from being screened.
Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the SABC served papers on Broad Daylight productions to prevent the screening of the documentary, "Unauthorised: Thabo Mbeki".
Kganyago said: "The documentary is our property and they do not have the right to show it to anybody."
The broadcaster has delayed the screening of the documentary, which is reportedly critical of President Thabo Mbeki, for over a year.
The Mail & Guardian newspaper, along with the Harold Wolpe Memorial Trust, planned to screen it as part of their Critical Thinking Forum at venues across the country from July 19 - 26.
The SABC's application will be heard at the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday.
Kganyago reiterated that the documentary would be shown by the SABC, but not until they have an "approved version".
The initial canning of the documentary caused an outcry with accusations of self-censorship levelled against the national broadcaster.
The SABC said at the time that the programme had been canned because "internal approval processes were not correctly followed".
The furore surrounding the documentary was proceeded by allegations that the corporation had banned certain political commentators.
