Johannesburg - About 5 000 health professionals will be recruited in the Eastern Cape over the next three years.
The Eastern Cape health spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said the recruitment was part of the department's strategy to reduce the child mortality rate by two-thirds and the death of mothers during birth by three quarters by 2014.
The recruitment entailed appointing 47 specialist doctors, 223 medical doctors, 216 pharmacists, 180 assistant pharmacists, 1 790 nurses, 611 clinical support health personnel and 813 health caregivers to support health professionals in clinics and hospitals.
Kupelo said the department had already recruited more than 4 684 health professionals between April 2006 and July 2007.
These included specialists, doctors, professional nurses and other health professionals.
The new employees were deployed to various hospitals across the province.
Between April last year and July this year 638 professionals were recruited to the Frere and Cecilia Makhiwane hospitals.
Earlier this year, Health MEC Nomsa Jajula announced an allocation of R100m for critical posts as part of the strategy.
Kupelo said another R47 million had been set aside to recruit more than 800 unemployed youth to assist with non-clinical duties across the province.
