'Poor hit most by violent crime'

Pretoria - President Thabo Mbeki says violent crimes are concentrated in South Africa's poor black areas.
Speaking at a news conference at the Union Buildings on the outcome of the mid-year cabinet lekgotla, Mbeki said this was why programmes to strengthen social cohesion were needed.
He said: "(Crime is) not just a policing matter; it's socio-economic; it's a drug abuse issue; its population migration and so on."
Citing Johannesburg as an example, he said Hillbrow and Alexandra township account for a third of the violent crime in the city, and that this told a story.
He said programmes to promote and strengthen social cohesion would be presented at the next cabinet lekgotla in January and that these would be prioritised.
The cabinet lekgotla resolved that crime fighting remained a major challenge and key priority for the government.
